Mexico Fishing

With more than 6,000 miles of fishable coastline, it is no surprise that Mexico is a popular destination for sport fishing enthusiasts from around the world. From amateurs to professionals, anglers of every skill level will thrill to the virtually unlimited number of charter fishing boats and travel services that help to create the perfect sport fishing vacations.

Mexico is home to shores that touch four major bodies of water, including the Pacific Ocean, the Sea of Cortez, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. From the upscale resorts of Mazatlan and Playa del Carmen to the popular beaches of Los Cabos and Baja Sur, Mexico offers anglers the chance to catch more than 500 different species of fish, and even offers excellent opportunities for fly fishing on the sandy flats of the Yucatan Peninsula near popular destinations like Cancun and Cozumel.

The warm ocean surface water around Mexico helps to provide the ideal environment for a highly diverse range of species of fish, as does the fact that the waters surrounding the country are subject to currents from the east, west, north and south, receiving an influx of plant and animal life from each of the four major bodies of water that are found in the region.

The Sea of Cortez is another popular destination for sport fishing, thanks to its ultra-deep waters, which are nutrient rich and blessed with nearly constant sunlight. Located between Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula and its mainland coast, the Sea of Cortez is also home to magnificent tidal currents that serve up an endless supply of fresh seawater that helps to create the tremendous volume and diversity of life that is found here.

The lower portion of the Mexican Caribbean coast, known as the Costa Maya, is another popular vacation destination for sport fishing enthusiasts, regularly delivering enormous examples of delicious red snapper and prized marlin. Strict licensing requirements must be followed when fishing for keeps in Mexico, but anglers are encouraged to catch and photograph as much as they like, as long as the fish are then released.

Punta Allen, located just three hours from Cancun in Mexico's stunning Riviera Maya, is home to Ascension Bay, and Club Grand Slam, which is one of the best locations for saltwater fly fishing in the entire world. Here, visitors can find fabulous cuisine, luxurious accommodations and master fly fishing guides to help them truly enjoy some of the most diverse flats fishing on earth. Punta Allen is one of the only places in the world where you can get a grand slam of fly fishing, which is when an angler succeeds in catching a bonefish, tarpon and permit all in one day.

The fishing around Cabo San Lucas is infamous among anglers and fans of the sport worldwide. The area is known for its Bisbee's Black and Blue Marlin Tournament, which is held each October and is the world's richest Billfish Tournament, with more than $4 million in prize money up for grabs. In fact, the top prize of $1 million even prompted Sports Illustrated to call the tourney "the superbowl of billfishing.
