In fact, many golf courses in Mexico are now some of the top courses in the world and Mexico even hosts the annual PGA tour international every February in the scenic Riviera Maya at Mayakoba.
Some of the best golf courses can be found in Puerto Vallarta, which is now home to 7 fabulous golf courses and is fast becoming a premiere golfing destination. One of the most popular here is the Flamingo, which was the first golf course to be introduced to the area by Englishman Percy Clifford. He was staying in Mexico and opened the course in 1978. The Marina, which was the second golf course to be built in Puerto Vallarta, is also one of the most popular, as it is close to town. The wildlife here is wonderful to see, including crocodiles, birds, iguanas and many others. This championship course was designed by Joe Finger in 1989 and has 18 holes with water on 13 of them. It is said by some that the Marina is the most challenging course in Puerto Vallarta.
The Vista, another of the major courses, is actually home to two 18-hole courses. The facility is operated by Club Corps and is proud to have been host to the EMC World cup in 2002. This drew the attention of the entire world to the Vista and made them an extremely popular golfing destination. Jack Nicklaus is responsible for designing the first course of the Vista in 2001, and Tom Weiskopf designed the second course. This course is on the property’s lower west end and is known as a first class golfing experience.
The Riviera Maya also boasts a few major and extremely popular golf courses in Mexico. In fact, the Riviera Maya area now sports some of the best greens and consequently attracts world-class golfers from all over the world.
One of the best golf courses in Riviera Maya is the Moon Palace Resort. This course is a Jack Nicklaus design and is one of the most popular of the courses available today. It also boasts a resort where you can get an all-inclusive package to stay and play. The course has 7,165 yards and is par 72.
The most popular and well-known golf course in The Riviera Maya has to be the Mayakoba. It hosted the first PGA international tour in 2007 and continues to do so every February. Designed by Greg Norman, it is one of the premier courses and is one of the area’s top 4 places to play. This course held the first tournament with cash prizes ever to be held in Mexico.
Another of the area’s top courses is the Iberostar Playa Paraiso Golf Club. This course was designed by P.B. Dye and is considered by many to be one of the very best in the region. It has an all-inclusive package to stay and play as well, making this an excellent choice for couples or groups.
