No Winner Yet in Tulum Airport Bidding
Last update 23 May, 2011
According to the Ministry, the bids were inadequate, so at this point none of the contenders have been given the go-ahead to begin construction.
The joint bid that was received from mining firm Grupo Mexico (GMEXICO.MX) and airport operator Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacifico (PAC, GAP.MX), was rejected because it did not meet the required operational or security standards and also demonstrated a number of legal inconsistencies.

According to a report Friday by Fox news, the Mexican Communications and Transport Ministry has rejected all three of the recent proposals that were submitted by companies bidding on a license to build and operate the new airport planned for Tulum, Mexico. According to the Ministry, the bids were inadequate, so at this point none of the contenders have been given the go-ahead to begin construction on the new airport on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.

In the statement, the Ministry said it rejected the bids in conjunction with the Mexican development bank Banobras, which is the country’s civil aviation authority and the airport authority.

Mexico’s Federal Competition Commission banned airport operator Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste SAB (ASR, ASUR.MX) from bidding on the project earlier this year. The company currently operates the nearby international airport in Cancun, but it did not present the necessary documentation to submit a bid after the ban.

A bid by a third group was also rejected due to the fact that it did not meet operational and security standards, and also showed legal inconsistencies. The Ministry has not yet announced when the tender will be launched again.

Great question Jonathan.  We just published the latest news here, Tulum airport news.  It is planned to be operational for 2014/2015.

Is the airport in Tulum a "done deal"? What is a "realistic" completion date/operational date?
