Yahoo News Names Merida, Mexico, a Top Retirement Destination
Increasing numbers of retirees are considering becoming expats and settling abroad in destinations like Mexico.

In Merida, the cost of living would allow the average retired American couple to live very comfortably on just $1,700 a month, which is just one example of why Mexico is ranked very highly compared to other international retirement destinations, such as Columbia or Thailand.

In July of 2011 Yahoo! Finance named Merida, Mexico, as one of the best eight places to retire abroad, naming the area’s fabulous beachfront lifestyle, affordable cost of living, state-of-the-art amenities and rich cultural heritage as excellent reasons for retirees to visit this hidden gem and see what all the fuss is about.

Gone are the days when most retirees flocked in droves to warm US locales like Florida to live out their golden years. Today, there are so many wonderful retirement destinations located outside of the US that increasing numbers of retirees are considering becoming expats and settling abroad in destinations like Mexico. They see the move as an opportunity to enhance their quality of life, increase longevity and conserve limited resources. The secret is out: Mexico is home to a wide variety of safe, affordable and visibly stunning places to retire that offer an attractive cost of living, plenty of real estate options and manageable health care plans.

The amount that is required to live comfortably will vary widely among retirees and depend largely upon the location, lifestyle and the type of home that is purchased. Luckily, there is a variety of information available concerning the estimated income requirements for virtually every destination that can help determine the minimum amount that would be required to live a comfortable retirement.

In Merida, the cost of living would allow the average retired American couple to live very comfortably on just $1,700 a month, which is just one example of why Mexico is ranked very highly compared to other international retirement destinations, such as Columbia or Thailand. The city boasts a population of more than 1.25 million people and a fabulous tropical climate with temperatures ranging from the 70s to the 90s, and Merida is also home to an international airport with a number of nonstop flights to the US and Mexico City. Merida also gives retirees affordable access to excellent medical care at several new and highly respected facilities, such as the Clinica de Merida.  In addition, some retirees may qualify for IMSS, which is Mexico’s public health insurance program.

Although Merida is quite different from Cancun, as the capital of Mexico’s Yucatan state it provides safe and convenient city living and a heavy dose of colonial charm. Located just over 20 miles inland from the sea, Merida is home to stunning examples of Old World architecture that gives the city a distinctly European ambience. In addition, the culinary scene is fabulous and there are a variety of arts and cultural venues, such as opera houses and theaters, while the growing number of US retirees has given rise to a local English-language library and newspaper.
