The Wall Street Journal’s MarketWatch recently reported on the world’s top 10 retirement havens, and Tulum real estate on Mexico’s Caribbean coast snagged the number three spot on the list. Compiled by editors at International Living, the list includes destinations that offer retirees a safe environment with a low cost of living and affordable real estate. 

Places like Tulum allow retirees to live the good life at “a fraction of the cost of living in the U.S.” and also provide a quality of life that is well above average. Described as “best value real estate,” you can still find a really nice home in Tulum for as little as $167,000. In addition, you can easily get by with speaking English here and in many other areas of Mexico, and it is very easy to get involved and become a part of the local community.

Tulum is quickly becoming a favorite destination among savvy travelers who fall in love with its beautiful sunsets, fantastic ancient Mayan archaeological sites and rich cultural heritage. Those who choose to call Tulum home during their retirement years will enjoy easy access to the ancient seaside Mayan pyramid located here, as well as a number of other well-preserved temples and shrines. Tulum offers many activities for retirees, including yoga on the white sand beaches, hiking, snorkeling, kayaking, windsurfing and sailing. 

In fact, there are a variety of places in Mexico that hold great appeal for retirees. According to International Living, for example, there are more than 80 interest groups in the Lake Chapala area, which is home to Mexico’s largest expat community and lies just inland from Puerto Vallarta on Mexico’s Pacific coast.
