There are actually five bays that make up “Las Bahias de Akumal,” and all of them are excellent for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, diving, beach combing and socializing by the bright blue Caribbean Sea.

Located between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, just south of Cancun in the heart of Mexico’s Riviera Maya, the town of Akumal is perched on the pristine white sand beaches of the Caribbean Sea. Resorts and tour companies in the area offer a variety of adventure activities, including scuba diving, windsurfing, canoeing and snorkeling along the world’s second-largest barrier reef, as well as world-class golf, jungle tours and more!

“Some of the most beautiful parts of the world are below the surface, and Cenote Santa Cruz is no exception,” wrote TravelPulse.

Cenotes (pronounced seh-no-tay) are naturally occurring underground sinkholes that dot the landscape of Mexico’s Riviera Maya. Visiting locales like Cenote Santa Cruz gives visitors access to some of the most breathtaking stalactite and stalagmite formations in the world, dating back more than 50 million years.

Of course, Akumal Beach is a huge draw for visitors and it also happens to be one of Mexico’s most popular beach destinations, because visitors can swim and snorkel with sea turtles. In fact, the word “Akumal” in the ancient Mayan language actually means “land of turtles.” There are actually five bays that make up Las Bahias de Akumal,” and all of them are excellent for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, diving, beach combing and socializing by the bright blue Caribbean Sea.

“Here you can lounge on the beach or take a tour where you will get up close and personal with the turtles,” wrote TravelPulse. “Caution on Akumal beaches – do not trample any raised sand mounds because our turtle friends might have some nests underneath.”

Insider Tip From Investment Properties Mexico: If swimming with sea turtles isn’t enough, consider taking one of the Dolphin Discovery adventure tours in the area as well!

While in Akumal, consider spending time exploring the Aktun-Chen Natural Park, which was founded in 1977 and is located in the heart of Mexico’s Riviera Maya. This 400-acre rainforest is home to whitetail deer, spider monkeys and lowland paca, but the zipline tours and underground river are also pretty amazing! Of course, with the ancient seaside pyramid of Tulum just 15 minutes south of Akumal, that’s another must-do excursion in the area.
