Zenzi

A bit more “hipster” than Fusion, Zenzi is located nearby and has a great bar that is situated almost right in the sand, as well as big, comfortable beach loungers that are set up under moveable shades so you can lounge all day and maximize or minimize your sun as you prefer. At Zenzi, DJ-selected tunes make the daytime fun and two bands play daily from 5 p.m. to midnight, while the restaurant offers a hearty beachfront breakfast, along with a variety of fresh-squeezed juice, coffee drinks and espresso and moves to more varied fare as the day progresses.

Mamita’s

As the original and ever popular beach club in Playa del Carmen, Mamita’s is still ground zero for serious parties and world-class DJ experiences. Serving as an anchor for many of the huge DJ events in the area, including the famous BPM Festival, Mamita’s is definitely where you should head if you are looking for the Miami vibe (but of course, Playa is better!). Daybeds, bottle service, DJ’s and a parade of young, beautiful people are always readily on tap here.

Canibal Royale

The Santanera Group’s latest beach club offering, Canibal Royale, is every bit as fabulous as all of their other projects. The property has a super cool design, with submarine doors opening to the individual bathrooms, great music, excellent drinks and good food all coming together to make for a seriously cool vibe. The restaurant and bar area has several levels to choose from, with a variety of sand seating and huge round daybeds to lounge on while taking in the scene and sampling their many amazing cocktails. A wood burning oven station is also located outside and is used to make many of their amazing creations. And, of course, the music is always spectacular.

Kool

Situated right next to Mamita’s, Kool is much like its neighbor, but a bit more relaxed during the day, especially outside of busy holiday periods. The restaurant serves up a nice breakfast menu with a variety of delicious traditional Mexican and American options and has great lunch and dinner dishes as well. Also, plenty of beach loungers, a bar next to the sand and DJ’s make it a great place for a day in the sun.

Punta Venado

Follow the signs to Punta Venado on the long winding dirt road just south of Xcaret and you will find a super-relaxed beach club with a bar and restaurant that is a bit out of the way of the normal touristy areas. They usually have floating kid jungle gyms in the water out front, which is also decent for snorkelling. A bit lower key than some of our other favorites, Punta Venado is a great beach club to visit if you’re looking for a day full of different experiences.

Kite Club at Xpuha

In our opinion, the Kite Club at Xpuha lies on one of the most beautiful beaches in the area. Obviously, their specialty is water sports, so it’s a great place to learn to kite surf or try your hand at paddle boarding. In recent years, they also added a cute bar and restaurant that is literally located in the sand, so you can come hang out all day even if you are not interested in trying your hand at the water sports. Regardless, try the frozen mojitos! Take note: Service can be slow, so just adjust your attitude and expectations accordingly because the beach here simply cannot be beat.

La Playa at Xpuha

Also on the beautiful Xpuha beach, La Playa is not actually one of our favorite beach clubs, but it still deserves mention. Serving typical Mexican food in what amounts to (for us) a too “touristy” atmosphere, many people like to come here and enjoy the bay and gorgeous scenery. On Sundays, expect to find a loud live band and a packed beach. If you want to see Xpuha but want to eat at a full restaurant, you should probably come here.

Buena Vida at Akumal

In the north bay of Akumal and you will find La Buena Vida, which is a bit of an institution in the area. Great food and drinks (try the black bean veggie burger!) and the entire restaurant and bar are located right in the sand. They even have “tree houses” you can sit in and have your drinks delivered Swiss Family Robinson-style in a bucket (adults-only for the tree houses). In addition to the regular sand restaurant seating, they also have low tables with Adirondack chairs, hammocks, huge bean bags and beach loungers, all of which are perfect for enjoying the day. Buena Vida shares a small pool (that has a VERY deep end) with the dive shop next door, which guests are welcome to use (it’s great for the kids who always seem to prefer pools). In the ocean out front it starts a bit rocky, but is very shallow – think waist high – all the way out to the reef, so it is a really great location for snorkeling.

Address Calle Caleta Yalku, head north on the beach road from the main entrance to Akumal.
