Don Sirloin

Don Sirloin is very similar menu to El Fogon, minus the full grilled steak options. Simply put, this is another great choice when you are looking for a place to get fantastic tacos. They also have the pastor-style spit fired meat, but what makes this place different is that instead of steak, they choose to use sirloin instead of the more commonly used flank steak. Don Sirloin also offers the same taco, tostada, quesadilla and grill options. It is a bit smaller than El Fogon, but also the same simple decor, with plastic tables and minimal flair.

La Cueva del Chango

This longstanding favorite by most locals in Playa is a great place for a variety of very fresh and interesting Mexican food. La Cueva del Chango is tucked into a lush natural setting (think: jungle garden with small ponds of turtles and recycled wine bottles incorporated into the roof and restrooms). All of the juices and smoothies are made with fresh fruit and it is a favorite breakfast and lunch spot (although they serve dinner as well). For breakfast, try the achiote chilaquiles or one of the empanada choices. At lunch, we love the enfrijoladas, along with the long list of soups and sandwiches.

Los Aguachiles

Another local favorite for very authentic Mexican food, but only of the seafood variety! Los Aguachiles is another winner by the Santanera group and there are actually two locations in Playa now because the first became so popular. This is a super simple and basic restaurant, with plenty of very tasty yet uncomplicated seafood-based Mexican specialties. There is an entire menu of Los Aguachiles, of course, which is ceviche’s slightly spicier and way more interesting cuisine, along with a wide variety of different tacos and other goodies to choose from. Oh, and everything is served up with an array of homemade sauces (try the chipotle cream one!).

El Fogón

With four locations in Playa, it’s obvious that El Fogon is a local favorite restaurant. Focusing on meats, it does both the pastor style meat - which is similar to Shawarma style spit fired meat that is made with pork instead and marinated with their signature spices - as well as a variety of different grilled specialties. Take your pick, then have it served with queso fundido, in tacos, tostadas or quesadillas, or just opt to enjoy a fantastic steak from the grill. All four of the locations are very unassuming and although it varies by location, they have plastic or maybe wooden chairs (at best) with minimal decor, so the focus is on food - where it should be! Service starts with lunch and the restaurant is open late, to take care of the munchies.

La Parrilla

Another popular local restaurant, but with a bit more of an upscale feel, La Parrilla has wooden furniture and traditional decor. The hostesses wear full Mexican dress, while mariachi and other live Mexican musicians visit with the patrons. This is a great spot directly on 5th Avenue, where you can sit upstairs on the balcony and have great people watching. They also have a similar menu to El Fogon, but have added some more elaborate dishes, incorporating tortilla soup, moles and more. Simply put, it’s a fantastic spot for good Mexican food with a slightly more festive atmosphere.
