Be Playa

Be Playa is in a great location just one block off 5th Avenue and just over two blocks from the Caribbean Sea close to Mamitas Beach. This hotel is known for its fabulous design, much like its sister hotel nearby in Tulum. The rooms have a modern beach vibe, are very nicely sized and beautifully done, with warm wood floors and comfy beds. Some even have fantastic free-standing jacuzzi tubs (book one of those!) and balconies. The service at Be Playa is very friendly and cool, and everyone is great at helping you find the best places around town. You can also opt to enjoy their great sushi restaurant downstairs, or retreat to the rooftop pool and bar area to hang out, sample some delicious cocktails, catch some sun and listen to cool house beats.

Hotel Cacao

One of the newer hotels in the area, Hotel Cacao comes with the same attention to detail and world-class design as its sister hotel Matilda in San Miguel de Allende. The location is spectacular because it is right on 5th Avenue, but it’s situated more in the northern part, where most of our favorite restaurants are located. so all you have to do is go downstairs and you are right in the middle of a fabulous section of town. The rooms are brand new and boast a crisp modern design and plenty of high end amenities. The Master Suites have a separate living area and jacuzzi tub on the spacious terrace. The on-site restaurant, Nibs, is located in a beautiful tall courtyard on the ground floor, but the real treat is the rooftop terrace, which is complete with pool and bar and many lounge areas to either hang out all day or enjoy the breeze and some cocktails and music at night. Hotel Cacao is adult only (14 years of age or older).

The Palm

A hidden gem just off 5th avenue in the more central part of 5th Ave, The Palm is an oasis waiting to be uncovered. Off its gorgeous central courtyard are its clean and modern rooms which offer several options beyond the basic room type, even offering one and two bedroom suites with separate living areas (great if you are traveling with kiddos but still want some privacy ;). Sit downstairs street side and enjoy your complimentary breakfast at their restaurant Cilantro which is decorated in vibrant colors and funky decor. Everyone loves their rooftop where there is a pool, jacuzzi and restaurant and bar. It’s a great place to unwind and enjoy a cocktail and the view across to Cozumel. They also have arrangements with close beach clubs so guests can enjoy their days on the beach as well.

Reina Roja

With a great location just off 5th close to Mamitas beach, Reina Roja calls itself a “themed hotel” with red colors symbolizing “passion, love and provocation,” and this is definitely the name it lives up to. With red lights illuminating almost the entire hotel at night, there are mannequins on the balconies in various types of erotic dress and there are many themed suites available in addition to the more standard (but still beautifully decorated) rooms. This includes Erotica, which is complete with a cage, mirrored ceiling and whips; After Hours, which is a completely soundproof suite that comes complete with sound equipment, disco lights and a bar; along with a variety of other (more tame) themed room options. Breakfast is included at Reina Roja in the street-level restaurant, but the rooftop pool and bar usually gets pretty busy and fun at night (which is the kind of thing you should want if you stay here!). We love their tagline… “Sleep with me.”

Deseo

If you came to Playa del Carmen to enjoy the city’s abundant nightlife, then Deseo is a fantastic place to stay. Situated just one block from the heavy bar center of town, Deseo is located up a flight of beautiful stone stairs just off 5th Avenue. It is a small, hip hotel, with just 15 rooms available (all of which are a bit on the small side), but if you stay here you are staying for the party atmosphere, not to hang out in the room. All of the guest rooms at Deseo are situated around the second floor pool (which is also smallish) and bar with lounge seating, which usually has a nice party going on at night. Read: If you want to stay in a quiet hotel, this is not it! To set the mood, old black and white movies are played against the huge wall overlooking the pool and the music is always fabulous. Oh, and did we mention they make some mean cocktails? This is an ideal hotel for those who just want to enjoy the party, especially until the wee hours. And since Deseo is located right in the middle of the everything in downtown Playa, there are countless restaurants and bars located just a few steps away.

Mahekal

Our favorite option on the beach in Playa, (since there are surprisingly not that many great ones to be found in the town proper), Mahekal is a newer addition to the area and brings a bit of the Tulum vibe to town. It’s a great location, and although it is on the beach, it is also just a block or two from the northern (very cool) part of Playa’s world famous 5th Avenue. All the rooms are in palapas (some are two stories high and others are individual beach palapas) set amongst the gorgeous garden grounds. Everything fronts up to the beautiful northern part of the Playa del Carmen beach. Currently the simple but beautifully decorated rooms don’t have TV (we think this is a plus) but there is WiFi, so don’t worry. Mahekal also boasts two pools, three bars and two restaurants, so you won’t be lacking for a cool place to hang out and grab a drink or a bite to eat. Two of the bars can be found flanking the pools, while another is tucked into the grounds near the fire pit and is complete with pool tables, ping pong, TV’s and a library corner. You can even cozy up at their outdoor fire pit seating area and enjoy some fresh mojitos. In our opinion, if you want a fantastic beachfront hotel in Playa, this is the one.
