Deseo

Situated up a stone stairway on 5th Avenue that is almost hidden from view, Deseo is a nicely lit, open air bar and lounge area on the second floor, flanking the main drag of the pedestrian area. The bar backs up to a small pool, and there is a huge wall to the side where they play old silent black and white movies. There are also ultra-lounge-y seating areas with big seats that resemble beds, complete with curtains that you can let down if you prefer some privacy. There is also low seating on one side where you can watch through the glass as people parade by down on 5th Avenue below. The music tends toward a lounge vibe and is always fabulous, with the talented DJ’s who are also fun to chat with. Drinks are also good (we are big fans of their mojitos), and the service is always cool and friendly at this small but very hip bar.

Club de la Cerveza

If you enjoy sampling a variety of different beers, look no farther than this little gem in the northern section of 5th Avenue. Club de la Cerveza has a super small bar inside, cute tables outside and is definitely an intimate place with a staff that knows their merchandise. They have a HUGE selection of beers from around the world and Mexico that is complete with full descriptions of each and every one. It’s really fun to go to Club de la Cerveza with a group of beer aficionados and sample a huge array of different brews, and if you want to discover what’s really going on with artisanal beer in Mexico, this is definitely the place to come. They have more variety for small production Mexican beer than anywhere else in the area by a long shot, along with a chalkboard list of other beers, in addition to the already massive menu. They also have a few food items for sale (presumably so you can sample more beer) like some tasty and thick home-cut fries, homemade onion rings and other similar items.

Hotel Cacao rooftop

To reach the Hotel Cacao rooftop bar, turn off of 5th Avenue at the VW Beetle decorated entirely in seashells, walk through the hotel’s huge open air courtyard and ride the elevators up to discover an oasis of elegant decor and good tunes. The entire rooftop and pool is always beautifully lit, with an incredible view across the Caribbean Sea to the island of Cozumel. Experience how it feels to be teased by the warm Caribbean breezes of Playa del Carmen while enjoying the lounge-style seating that is complete with low-slung sofas and chairs, as well as pieces that resemble beds which are ideal for true lounging and sharing with friends! The cocktails really do shine at Hotel Cacao, with mixology being their specialty. Our current favorites are the Rosemary Rum (kind of like a mojito with rosemary) and La Mexicana (a gin concoction using horchata, which is a Mexican rice milk made with cinnamon). The bar also has a limited food menu that includes a couple of nice ceviches, a hamburger and three different types of french fries (natural, with truffle oil or with chile and lime). This is a fantastic place to come if the weather is on the warm side, as the breeze is always fresh up on the rooftop.

Cantina 38

Head toward the beach on 38th and you will see this fun outdoor venue on the North side of the street, about a block or so from the beach. Cantina 38 is set in a pretty garden and has great lighting, with a stream running through one section. This is a popular spot among the young “after work” type crowd (or at least, it is in the early part of the evening). The bar gets busy starting at happy hour and almost always stays that way late into the night. The drinks here are well priced and they play host to both DJ’s and live bands for their musical entertainment, but the live music usually starts later in the night. Cantina 38 also offers some food options, including what we would describe as “Mexican bar food.” Think: A menu of tacos and snacks with a few pizza offerings.

Be Roof by Be Playa

This rooftop venue is a good place to come both day and night. With a long, narrow (but shallow) pool that oftentimes has tables and chairs set up right in the water, you can catch some rays during the day or socialize under the stars at night. The Be Playa rooftop also features beautiful lounge music that sets the stage for the party here, which is always a good time. The service here is also amazing, with servers and bartenders who are always super friendly and helpful, ready to make sure you are doing well. They also have a custom cocktail menu at the Be Playa rooftop bar that you should definitely peruse before sampling one (or more) of their specialty drinks.

Tequila Barrel

Tequila Barrel is the best place in Playa to watch sporting events, if that is what you are into, especially American football. It’s a typical sports bar in that there are plenty of TV’s playing all the most relevant live games, along with a big bar and lots of tables outside (made out of tequila barrels of course). Tequila Barrel is located right on Playa’s ever-popular 5th Avenue and even has a separate room in the back that is air-conditioned (this is especially important in the summer months) with even more TV’s. There is decent bar food available and the drinks are well priced for a place that is located directly on 5th Avenue. A fair number of tourists typically frequent Tequila Barrel (some of which just might wind up dancing on the bar from time to time), but it really is the best place in town to watch sports when you need to get your fix. Tip: You can bet on a variety of different sports here as well.

Sala Rosa

This small indoor/outdoor bar is a nice little hidden gem located a bit north just off 5th Avenue. With a small footprint, nice tall tables outside and a few spots inside, Sala Rosa is popular with locals who live in the area. This bar features good music, (mostly lounge with some rock) and a small DJ area for when they have someone mixing live. They also have a small menu of finger foods, but it’s only available for a few hours and it starts early (we especially like the cheese plate they offer). Our favorite thing at Sala Rosa is the house made Sangria, which is a proper Sangria (in Mexico they tend to just mix red wine and lemonade), that is sold by the glass and the PITCHER (don’t be shy). On many nights they offer fab two for one specials (even on Sangria pitchers if you’re lucky) and the staff is super friendly and fun.

This bar makes our list for the simple fact that it is absolutely great for live music. Located just north of Constituyentes, the owner hails from a famous Mexican rock band, so the bar always has a live act and they are always good musicians (usually of the rock variety). It is located right on 5th Avenue, so you won’t have to sacrifice the area’s fantastic people watching just because you want to hear some fantastic live music.
