An ancient natural system dating back 225 million years, the reefs function as a natural barrier to storms and hurricanes and are critical to the survival of plant and animal species. South Akumal is located less than five minutes from Akumal proper. It is an exclusive, safe, small gated community of privately owned beachfront villas. The beach is white sand and often quoted as the best in the area. 24 hour security is present, and the beach is  cleaned daily. From South Akumal, restaurants and other services are available to the north in Akumal or the south in Tulum.
