The Riviera Maya
The Riviera Maya runs along the Yucatan Peninsula Coast on the Caribbean Sea. It stretches nearly 72 miles from Cancun south to Tulum with Playa del Carmen near its center. The Riviera Maya is located in the state of Quintana Roo, the fastest-growing state in Mexico. When Quintana Roo officially gained its statehood in 1974, Cancun International airport opened, and the first hotel followed. Previously, the area was only accessible via boat or military aircraft. The isolated, indigenous Mayans even thought of the Mexicans as foreigners. The land was originally given to the Mayans by the government for farming, primarily coconuts. The government thought the land was worthless. How wrong they were!
The area is rich and diverse in ecological wonders and world-class activities. In a day, one can explore the world’s second-largest barrier reef, trek through the jungles in search of monkeys and jaguars, shop along the exquisite Fifth Avenue in Playa del Carmen, or relax along miles of topaz-blue water on white-powder sand beaches. The fishing is fantastic, the scuba diving is second to none, and the Mayan Ruins in the region make this place an unforgettable cultural experience, as well as the most popular tourist destination in all of Mexico.
